A Year of Projects - Making the List

Planning ahead for a year of projects is a daunting task for me. Typically, I avoid trying to anticipate today what I will want or be able to do that far in the future. This comes after many years of planning, scheduling and otherwise attempting to manipulate my life into submission with disastrous results! These days I’m much more of a “be here now” kinda gal!  Why then have I chosen (yes, this is a choice) to participate in a YoP? The best I can figure is because I like to learn new things and I especially like the community of bloggers and the support they offer each other. After reading through most of the threads in the Ravelry Group Come Blog-A-Long I thought, “What a great group of people. I’d like to hang out with them and give this thing a try!”

But how am I going to make a list that I have any hope of sticking to for a whole year? Last year, many people strayed quickly and often from their original lists.  This year more folks are leaning towards broader goals (I’ll crochet 10 hats for charity). This, (I think) I can do! Now I have to decide what I want to learn and how I’m going to do it.  So I started where I usually do, at the library with a big old pile of books! This is a sample of the roughly two dozen books I’ve looked at over the past few weeks!
After oohing and aahing over many, many beautiful projects (and plenty that flops), I knew that I didn’t want to commit to one book for the whole year. I decided to come up with 10 things that I want to learn about or improve upon. The books were so important in helping me choose. Here is my list, in no particular order:

  • Make a sweater (that really fits!) from Custom Crochet Sweaters by Dora Ohrenstein
  • Improve my sock skills
  • Explore the world of Granny Squares
  • Learn Painted Crochet
  • Dye my own yarn
  • Make something with up-cycled materials
  • Crochet a rug
  • Design my own wrap
  • Learn a new lace technique (ie: Hairpin, Bruges, or Filet)
  • Make at least one sewing project from 101 One Yard Wonders
  • Give double ended hooks a try
  • Learn Tunisian Crochet
Okay, so that’s 12 things! But it’s exciting, and I’m feeling good about my list.  I took my time and really gave a lot of thought to what I want to learn and what’s realistic for me. Many of these things have been flittering about in my head for a while.  The difference is now they’re written down. I’m hopeful that a YoP will help motivate me to get busy with my Holiday Stashdown projects. A few months ago I joined up with Marie at Underground Crafter because I wanted to keep ahead of my holiday gift making, instead of having it turn into the last minute nightmare it usually becomes. To date my progress has been less than stellar. Now I’ve gone ahead and made my second public declaration of things I want to accomplish in a finite amount of time! That means it’s time to stop procrastinating and start crocheting!

I had books everywhere!!
I hope that you’ll stop in now and again and see how I’m doing.  I’m looking forward to meeting lots of new people and having great adventures trying new things! You can pop into the group to see what everyone else is doing. Also, why not stop by Marie’s and see what’s happing in the Stashdown world.

There you have it friends! The beginning of something wonderful.

Until next time,
Be blessed and stitch & read with love!

I think your list shows the thought and care you put into it. Its got a good range of items but its also broad enough to suit your here and now style. A little structure can be good but I can understand not wanting much so I hope it works out well for you, I'm looking forward to seeing your progress over the coming months and I hope you enjoy being part of the group, I know I do.

It seems like it will be easy to combine your YOP goals with your holiday crafting, as long as you don't mind giving away some of the beautiful things you crochet :).

You list truly does show you've given good thought to a year. Afraid mine wasn't that well thought out, as I'm already thinking...gees forgot that, maybe I should change that etc, but will play through for awhile and see how it goes before making changes. Looking forward to another year and like you learning and meeting other bloggers/knitters/crocheters.

Your list lends itself to a lot of blogging possibilities and a great expansion of your current skillset. Some of the books up there I've had in my "I should look at those" pile for awhile so I look forward to seeing which ones you delve into. Good luck this year!

It's an admirable list. I've been trying to work with some of the books I have as well. I buy them. I ooh and aah over them. Now it's time to actually DO some of the projects, LOL!

That's so exciting Robin!!!!!
I like the fact that you feel it like a challenge and a procedure through which you're gonna learn new crocheting techniques!! Sweater, granny squares, dyeing of yarn(!!!) only some of your projects that caught my eyes!!!
Wonderful, I like this creativity smell in the air.....
Kisses,
Angeliki

Thanks everyone!
For your kind words and encouragement. Beginning a project like this is a big thing for me (even though it's all for fun)!
I'm not sure where I'm going to start - I want to do it all right now!! We're going to have a great time learning, sharing and laughing I'm sure as I attempt to broaden my horizons! Happy 4th of July!

Good luck getting through that list. I've been doing Tunisian and double ended for a while so I might be able to help there, or at least point you in the direction of a few good videos. YoP is one thing that I don't think I'll ever participate in because I have no idea how long any of my projects are going to take.

It's always lovely to browse through the books isn't it? I'm hoping that being vague about my list will help me to stick to it to.

That's a good list :D

Mine's shorter, only 9 knitted items, but I'm sure I'll add to it. In fact one thing I ought to add is 'learn to crochet'!

Your list looks very sensible and good luck with your new goals re learning new things. I hope you enjoy double ended hook and tunisian as much as I do. I've just recently embarked on tunisian and love it - I find it very relaxing. Look forward to your weekly updates. xoxoxox

Wowzer, that is a challenge! I know for sure I would never keep this up. My plan was to design one new thing a month this year and I've already fallen behind - and I have so much time on my hands now! I wish you the best of luck and I am impressed with your motivation and enthusiasm! I will keep checking in to see how you're doing and for some inspiration :-)
